How the data platform Volteras uses Mercedes-Benz vehicle data to power intelligent fleet solutions

The UK-based energy data platform Volteras Technologies is redefining how mobility and energy assets are managed through data. With operations across Europe and North America, the company serves electric vehicle fleet operators, energy utilities, insurers, telematics providers, and vehicle marketplaces. Through our innovative Mercedes-Benz Fleet Partner API, Volteras can seamlessly integrate Mercedes-Benz vehicle data into its own products and solutions.

The platform’s two core products, Volteras Connect API and Volteras Portal, form the foundation of its offering. The API ingests, streamlines, and streams real-time telemetry from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), covering electric vehicles (EV), chargers, solar inverters, home batteries, and heat pumps. The portal complements this by offering intuitive onboarding, continuous monitoring, analytics dashboards and data visualisations to support decision-making.

Solving key industry challenges
Like for other telematics providers, one of the main technical obstacles in fleet management is harmonising fragmented vehicle data across different OEMs states Volteras. The data platform addresses this with a single, unified data scheme that enables sub-second telemetry without relying on retrofit solutions. For Volteras, effective fleet management means treating vehicles and energy devices as programmable digital assets.

The platform enables remote access to real-time location data, battery state of charge, vehicle diagnostics, and remote command capabilities such as charging. This digital-first approach remains fleet uptime and simplifies deployment. Vehicles can be activated remotely using only a vehicle identification number (VIN), with no workshop visit necessary or installation delays. Data starts flowing instantly, feeding directly into customer platforms for immediate operational use.

Real-world use cases

Customers use the platform across a wide range of applications:

  • Fleet visibility and dispatch through real-time location information and geofencing
  • Charge management using battery state of charge and smart-charging commands
  • Maintenance planning driven by battery health data
  • Mileage tracking for regulatory compliance and lease management
  • Vehicle control via pre-conditioning features

“Replacing fragmented tools and retrofit hardware with a single OEM-integrated system gives customers complete fleet transparency and control. Our system is built on native vehicle data, such as the data received via the Mercedes-Benz Fleet Partner API from Mercedes-Benz Connectivity Services GmbH.”

Peter Wilson, CEO | Volteras

Impact and efficiency gains
The integration of OEM vehicle data and the start of our partnership in 2023 have brought measurable benefits. According to Volteras, fleet customers report lower energy costs through optimised charging strategies and reduced downtime due to predictive maintenance. Administrative overhead is also reduced as trip data, diagnostics, and usage metrics are automatically logged and shared in real time. Compared to conventional retrofit solutions, cost savings can be achieved. Customers avoid upfront hardware costs and eliminate recurring fees, resulting in a reduction in total cost of ownership per vehicle.

Customer feedback and outlook
Feedback from Volteras customers highlights three recurring advantages: rapid onboarding with only a VIN list, secure and warranty-safe access to factory data, and the simplicity of working with a single integration rather than multiple proprietary systems.

Current data packages of our Mercedes-Benz Fleet Partner API in use include Position Data, Mileage, Charging Data, Vehicle Health Data, and Remote Command Packages. Customers have also expressed interest in expanding to include tyre wear monitoring, usage-based maintenance, pay-as-you-drive insurance, and CO₂ savings metrics. On the energy side, new applications such as optimised charging, demand response, and participation in virtual power plants are emerging as the next phase of development.

Data security and compliance
The data platform places strong emphasis on data security and privacy. Its infrastructure goes beyond compliance requirements, adhering to best practices in cloud security and regularly undergoing audits and penetration tests. All systems are designed for GDPR compliance and meet international standards for data governance, according to Volteras.
