London, 29th August — With BMW and MINI announcing that they will soon be shutting down all reverse-engineered APIs, many third-party data providers will no longer be able to access or transfer vehicle data to their customers.

For utilities that rely on those data providers, this poses a big problem. Without access to authorized data sources, they may lose customers: if their EV drivers are no longer able to remotely manage their charging sessions—which saves them time and money—they’ll likely look for another utility provider.

There are countless reasons behind the OEMs’ decisions to shut down unofficial APIs. Unofficial APIs rely on hacking for data sourcing, which violates terms of service and produces poor-quality data streams with slow transfer speeds, frequent outages and risks of data leaks. Of course, like all OEM policy updates, the new restriction puts its vehicles and security first.

As many utilities currently work with third-party providers that operate unauthorized streaming, they will need to look elsewhere for alternatives—and fast.

BMW will be restricting access to managed charging from September 2025, while ensuring that drivers’ mobility requirements are balanced with charging efficiency.

One particular energy data provider will be unaffected by this change. Volteras was purpose-built to stream data via authorized integrations with OEM APIs—direct from the source. Since its founding in 2022, the start-up has partnered with numerous leading OEMs including BMW, MINI, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen Group AG and more. Because of its official integrations, Volteras is able to provide a live flow of accurate, secure, and real-time data.

This means uninterrupted insights from multiple OEMs for utilities, fleets, and other mobility businesses. It also means data is transmitted through secure, OEM-encrypted channels, which are protected from cybersecurity attacks. Volteras puts data security first, to onboard customers—so customer data is safe.

“With access to more authorized APIs than anyone else, we’re future-proofing EV connectivity for our customers,” said Peter Wilson, Volteras CEO. “This is why our data is the most reliable in the market—which helps the now-merging energy and mobility industries to innovate and scale.”

As more OEMs will inevitably follow suit in shutting down unreliable reverse-engineered APIs, Volteras offers utilities the solution they need: a single, trusted source for EV data.
